Floyds long ride.
Posted on 21. Apr, 2009 by Derrick.
After work I headed over to Floyd’s house so that we can continue our ‘training’ for our triathlon. He had said that he isn’t far from the Front Range Trail which happens to run into downtown Denver.
Riding on the road and riding on a bike path that is next to a river are two totaly diferent things. Lots more ups and downs, twists and turns, and don’t forget the occasional bumb.
Anyways, it was a plesant ride. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 miles. Floyd seems to be getting a good rythem that suits him. We stopped at the REI downtown and grabbed some waters. Floyd thinks the “babes are hot” down there. I can’t disagree.
Tonight I go check out the local pool so we can start adding swimming to our routine.

The Beginning
Posted on 16. Apr, 2009 by Derrick.
I don’t do well without goals. One of my good buddies from highschool, John, is big into doing triathlons. I got the crazy idea to ask him some advice on where to start on doing one.
He said that the best thing to do is start with a “sprint”. So, I went looking around and found the crescent moon sprint triathlon in september. Its a 750 Meter Swim * 20K Bike * 5K Run.
I told my other good freind Floyd about it, and he is going to join me in training and doing the tri. Today was our first ride. It was colder than a witches tit, we had a head wind, 400 feet of hill climb, and this was Floyd’s first time on a “real” ride.
He is a fast learner and will be a pro in no time. Next week we start the swimming.
Here is the ride we took this morning. 10 Miles.

Dead snake Sunday
Posted on 21. Apr, 2008 by Derrick.
I’m not talking about the D-backs. I’m talking real dead snakes.
Its only 2 weeks untill our big ride in California. So we hit one of our favorite rides to Fountainhills. Its a 55 mile ride with a rather large hill. Watch the youtube video below for a peek at halfway up the hill. (When I’m zoomed in on the GPS unit I was attempting to show my speed which at the time was only 6mph)

At about mile 15 there was a rather large dead snake in the road that I almost hit. When I looked back to see if Summer had ran him over she was laughing and pointing. I gatherd by her pointing at the ground that she hadn’t missed him.
Between now and our California trip we only have 1 more ride scheduled, so we wont have that much activity in commuting. We will do a couple hikes here and there to keep our legs fresh, but we need to keep off our saddles to keep biking in Cali fun. The next couple of blogs are going to be going over our equipment, route, and plan for our CPH trip.
Till next time

Fat Sunday
Posted on 06. Apr, 2008 by Derrick.
We did a little tour of Tempe today, 37 miles. Not much to talk about except that we stopped at IHOP and seriously over ate. The last 10 miles were tough with about 3 lbs of french toast, chicken fajita omlet, and a whole craf of OJ in my tummy. Yummy Yummy!

Pink pony South Mountain
Posted on 05. Apr, 2008 by Derrick.
Last weekend after our Saturday ride, Summer exclaimed that she wanted to start early on our Saturday ride today. Keeping that In mind, I went to bed early last night. Summer on the other hand just “had” to watch that last movie. I got up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 6am. Summer was dragged out of bed kicking and screaming FINALLY at 7:15.
We hit the road at 8 and started out by going east. Something that we have never done.
Today we went to breakfast early In the ride. I spotted an einstien bagel shop and we hit breakfast real quick. I had my usual bacon egg and cheese. Summer likes the chocolate chip bagel with honey and peanut butter.

Soon after leaving breakfast we ran Into the Phoenix bike swap. Summer and I rode around tons of used bikes being sold. It was a good thing that I didn’t have the car with me our any cash. I would have bought this killer fixie but thought better of it. I already have enough bikes that Summer gets on my case.
Imediatly after leaving the bike swap we hit our hill portion of our ride. I set these Saturday rides up with plenty of hills since our California trip is going to be nothing but hills. For the next 10 miles we are hitting some decent vertical. We took plenty of breaks and did some sight seeing. One of which is a killer lamborghini that Summer and I have seen twice now, both times while on a bike ride.
Apparently there is a big para gliding launching point off of South Mountain. Summer and I took some time to watch the para gliders catch the Phoenix thermals. Shortly after the gliders we came up on hour highlight of the day. The pink pony.

I have no earthly idea why they died the horses mane and tail pink, but it was an odd site for sure.
We got home at around 12 ish and got our bathing suites on and jumped in the pool.
Till tomorrow.

Sunday ride
Posted on 23. Mar, 2008 by Derrick.
My first ride since being sick went well. I geared up and hit the road with no problems.
Sometimes when I ride, my mind wonders to lots of different things. I’ve recently been doing my check list for gear that I’m going to have to bring on our bike tour in California.
Summer after our long ride last weekend has stated that we need to ride together allot more. I didn’t foresee a problem that came up. Summer is physical fit enough to handle the 9 day trip. She had no problem with the matching my speed, however she didn’t predict how her neck would feel after 6 hours on the bike. Hindsight being 20/20 I think we would have done allot more rides together than all the commuting that we have been doing. Don’t get me wrong, the commuting thing is awesome. My rides to work gives me 41 miles a day, hers only 22.
So for the next couple of weeks we are going to commute only Thursday and Fridays, then longer rides on Saturday. Eventually the weekend before our trip we will complete a century ride. Thats 100 miles straight.
Anyways, here is my route for tonight. all 2.5 miles of it.
I wanted to go to the store for ice cream and the girls needed more margaritas.
